I wish Americans would stop using the term critical thinking. It's one of those phrases that says absolutely nothing.

Thinking is an involuntary activity that some tend to do more than others.

The above scenarios would all be recognised if one were well-educated - given a solid base of factual knowledge throughout one's school days.

After all, there are only so many scams....
