I was living in Cape Town when it became the first city in the world to be in danger of running out of water. There were very strict fines for using more water than we were allowed. No more than a two minute shower and a few liters allowed per day - for all households.
There was talk of draining the aquafer underneath the city. That made me shake my head The city would sink. I'm not sure if I'm remembering this clearly, but I think Singapore is sinking bedause they are using the aquafer underneath the city as a water source.
