I truly don't get this. I was born in one of the colonies (South Afrida) at the time that the British Empire still existed. I lived through all the countries becoming republicans.
What no one is saying here is that those countries were well run (albeit racist) while the Brits ran then. When the Brits left, they fell into shambles. The exception was South Africa.
Look what happened to Zimbabwe. it went from being the breadbasket of Africa (that is how it was known) to what it is now - where people are starving, and where the currency is so weak that the American dollar is used.
South Africa was kicked out of the commonealth as a result of apartheid. I think that was 1960 when it became a republic. It managed fine, despite sanctions by the international community which took place in 1979.
It went bankrupt as a result in the early 90s, plus the violence in the township made the country unstable. (i'm not condoning apartment). So there was a change in the regime in 1992 - 30 years ago.
The country functioned well - it had a good education system, a functioning electricity company, etc.
Now it's all gone.
How come colonialism is blamed for all this. Colonialism has been gone a very, very long time. At least half a century in fact.
The problems that currently exist are not the result of colonialism. Of course, I'm not allowed to say that, because that would be racist.
Australia, Canada, and New Zealand do not have these problems, despite still being colonies.
Isn't it time we looked to see what other issues there are?
