I think the days of submitting to publications are over. I think that the new policies of Medium make that quite clear. They removed the editors and are now focusing on writers.

I would think the best advice to new writers would be:

1. Get your formatting right, and make sure there are no typos because the algorithm will pick it up and check it out before it gets to the editors.

2. Open your own publication and post all your writing there. Different publications for different topics.

3. Hope to hell you're a good enough writer and selected a good enough topic to get selected for distribution.
