I think you're missing something here. It's irrelevant that it's 'only' a small percentage. The point is that the small percentage means that the virus is not wiped out, and the moment we go out of social distancing, masks, and lockdown, it will start spreading again. And it only needs one person to start the spread again- Covic is spread exponentially.

Also, you're looking at America. Three months ago, I was in South Africa. Two months ago, I was in Germany. A few weeks ago, I moved to Portugal. The numbers are different in every country, and while America may be vaccinated, Africa is not. Nor is South America.

We're not even close to wiping this thing out, and so long as it's out there, regardless of which country, it will spread. According to WHO, the numbers are rising - not declining.

The UK is lifting all it's restrictions in a week - 19th July. Germany is lifting travel restrictions for 80 countries.

My sister, in South Africa, is under lockdown level 4. I spent 6 weeks in lockdown level 5. Nobody was allowed to step outside their houses - only for food and medical. If you stepped out the house, and you had the virus, you were arrested and jailed for attempted murder. The virus still spread - this was in the early stages in South Africa.

If I remember correctly, the UK has the highest number of vaccinations on this side of the pond (might be the world), but infections are rising rapidly with Delta.

The spread is not slowing in Africa. And the more it spreads, the more it mutates.

South America people are dying like flies. There is very little vaccination.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/south-america-is-now-covid-19-hot-spot-witheighttimes-the-worlds-death-rate-11624299176

My point is that the virus is spreading an dincreasing in numbers - not declining, and the fact that a few first world countries have high rates of vaccination does not mean that we are even close to wiping this out.

On top of that, even in first world countries, there are those who refuse to get vaccinated. That means they are open to infection.

Now let's look at why the Delta variant is more infectious and is bypassing variants. I don't think you're seeing the big picture here. The virus is evolving.

Delta is more airborne - so it's smaller. In Australia, one woman walked past another woman in a shopping centre. She was infected in two or three seconds. They have this on video.

This is not the last variant, and it won't be the most deadly. So long as Covid is around, it will keep mutating and adapting. And even if only one is more infectious and more serious, it will spread, and the friendlier adaptations will not matter.

According to WHO, more people have died in the first six months of this year than died throughout the whole of last year.

While you may think I'm being negative here, I'm not. I'm being realistic. America has 5% of the world's population, and there are a lot of other countries who won't be vaccinated for years and years. The countries don't have the budget. And drug companies are charging them a lot more than they are charging first world countries.

In Yemen, where there is civil war, starvation, and all sorts of terrible things happening, the death rate from Covid was 20% a few weeks ago. That's what happenes when there is no lockdown and no help.

I'm aware of the stories that say that Covid will just become another flu, etc. However, I'm also aware of the scientists who say that that's just an opinion. The idea that it's just going to become another slight infection is crazy. We are no longer living in the days when people were more isolated than they are today. I'm aware of the cycles.

I, of course, am not happy with the situation, but I refuse to look at it through rose colored glasses. My daughter is still in the States. She has been vaccinated. My sister is in South Africa. She has been vaccinated, but since she's very well off and had full medical coverage, it puts her in the top 5%. I haven't been vaccinated as I'm currently without full settlement status in any country.

I can't even buy the damned thing.
