I think there would be questions as to why some people change after heavy emotional events (and others don't). Most don't.
The questions would be:
Were they originally raised in an environment which was different to their natural orientation, and when something difficult came along, they finally switched to who they really were?
Does the size of the frontal lobe or amydala suddenly expand? Because that's not what neuroplasticity is.
