I think it's more than that. I think Americans have been indoctrinated to believe that if they are not admired, if they are not totally accepted, if they are not the top of the pops, then they are nobody. Aericans cannot be a nobody. It is something that they can't live with. Obviously, this is not every American I'm talking about - just sufficient for it to be noticeable as a national trait.
