I think it depends on why you read.

If you take a look at Medium, many of the 'friendly chat' type of articles don't actually say anything. They just fulfil a need for people to relax and not take life seriously.

I grew up in terrible circumstances, so I really needed super heroes to get me through the day. I absolutely knew there was no such thing - but it lifted my mood. And that was what I needed.

I think you'll find that we live in highly stressful times - people don't want complex or serious. They want to dream of the white knight coming to the rescue. :)
