I suggest you go and read Medium's history. It is 12 years old, and it was designed for readers - not for writers or social networking. A year ago, because Medium was losing tens of thosands of readers, it switched to become a writer's site. Many writers have subsequently left, as has most of the magazines like The Atlantic, The Economist and the Nw York Times.
