I saw it. Too many people writing about me these days.
In days gone by, poetry used to be far more popular than it is now. The reason it is unpopular is because it isn't poetry. Been there, explained that. When I spoke about the masses, I'm talking about the reading public. And it is the reading public that is voting that it doesn't like what passes for poetry today.
I read for at least 5 hours every day. I have read sufficient poetry - studied it 5 years at K12 level and 2 years at college level.
All these 'educated' people on poetry keep mentioning Shakespeare's 'free verse.' Yes, those were plays - not poems. His poems rhyme. Look at his sonnets.
The fact that they don't read it doesn't mean that they aren't able to pass an opinion. They have passed an opinion by not reading it. They read things they enjoy - like James Patterson, Jane Austin, and poetry that rhymes. :)
