I heard those arguments at the time. The devil is in the details. Nobody ever explained why those costs were that high.
However, the running costs were much lower, so let's do this the other way round.
Take the cost of a rail ticket or a plane ticket or a phone call or anything that used to be nationalized. Then multiply it by the number of people who paid for those services. That was the collective cost of running those services.
Then take what people are paying for those services today, and the cost to people is many, many times greater. That is because, even if initial costs were lower (and I'm not convinced they would be), then whatever the state paid for those capital costs, it's far less than the profit made by corporations today.
The only people who objected to the State spending that money were the people who paid 95% tax. I never ever saw evidence that there was overspend.
Look at all those apartment blocks in Florida that 'fell down' because private enterprise didn't do their jobs properly. How do you think people get as rich as they do?
The fact that medicare, a government project, is run so well, and can provide far cheaper servicers indicates that government can and does run things well. Of course, it depends on which people are in government. There are always corrupt officials.
I do not want solar panels. They are destroying the environment in Africa. The chemicals used in mining is destroying the land. And at some point, the batteries are just as dangerous as nuclear waste - even though there are now start ups to reuse the batteries.
Not sure what you mean by trade controls.
Forget employee presentation. The company will always win. Return to unionisation. The only thing that is understood by private enterprise is force.
I have no issue with employee owned businesses and cooperatives, but you do realize that this is collectivism - the building blocks of communism?
Wow. Credit card interest in the States is 30%? I haven't used a credit card for nearly 20 years. They became accepted in the 70s. Before that, debt was regarded as something one didn't do. I live on a cash basis - no accounts.
My only monthly payments are rent, electricity, phone, wifi, garbage collection, medical.
It's very doable.
Credit needs to be eliminated.
