I have German citizenship. I obtained it more than 35 years ago as a result of my late father being a holocaust survivor. All children of holocaust survivors are granted German nationality.
I don't speak German for two reasons. The first is I was born directly after WWII, and my late mother wouldn't let me learn it. The second reason is that I find learning a language very difficult. I have an audtiory processing disorder and short term memory impairment. I also also on the spectrum.
I went to Germay 18 or 19 months ago. I stayed three months trying to get my documentation and papers in order. After three months, I said 'fuck you,' and left. I am now in Ireland. When I have lived here for 5 years, if I am still alive, I will apply for Irish nationality.
I had no problems.
As for speaking English, they can all go get screwed. I went to Dusseldorf because it had the highest number of English speaking people - well over half of them. I could not find a single English speaking person, even if hte police, the government, or anywhere else. I am also convinced that they could speak English. They just didn't want to.
During one of my last interviews, one German offical was stunned that I spoke English 'properly.' She told her colleague, "She speaks English properly."
I was told by another dual South African that Germans think that South Africans are stupid. Well, after living in that country for three months, I hace a very different opinion of Germany.
