I have always wondereds about this. Around about 2006/7, I decided to live on a cash basis. I gave up Adobe pretty much after that. I use Paintnet which allows me to use layers and other stuff. I've never been able to replace Dreamweaver, though.

I don't have any subscriptions. I use MS Word - student version which works just fine, and is a once off purchase.
