I finally got my daughter out in November. I was determined that she wasn't going to return, and she was determined to return. Two months later, she was finally able to look at the US and see it for what it was - that was what 2 months in Europe did.

I left in 2014.

No, it wasn't as bad as it is now. However, the culture was unkind, inhumane. Far from being well-paid, I sunk into poverty. Everybody wanted me to write for them - without pay. I was paying my dues, they said (despite being published for more than 40 years at the time.

I couldn't stand the lack of logic, the general ignorance, the belief in gods, and too much else to mention.

Ironically, the USA taught me a lot. There are aspects of it I will always miss, and much of it will always be home, even though I only spent 11 years there.
