I don't know where you get this idea that other people are obliged to read what you write just because you read what they write.

I have been published for 60 years, and my father before me, like me, was also published from a very early age.

People read people who have interesting things to say, and who say it well.

This idea of 'engagement' is a result of the fact that writing is an over-subscribed occupation. There are more writers in the world now than readers. Nobody has time to read that much. So, people who benefit from 'teaching writing' or who own 'content writing sites' tell you that writers build a readership by writers supporting each other.

Nope, writers build a readership by being very good writers and by writing about things that other people want to read. Most of my readers are not writers - they only read.
