I can't even relate to that. I did a classical education. From the age of 13 up (Grade 8), all answers were essays. All essays had to be familiar with the topic, answer whatever question was asked, and then explain why you gave that answer.

Examples.

Compare the governments of the USSR and Red China. Which, in your opinion, is the more humane, and why?

Both Hitler and Napoleon were unable to conquer Russia. Give your reasons.

Our syllabus comprised Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Latin, English, Afrikaans, (and I had German and French for a while).
