I always wonder what it is that makes people chose the best books ever written. I always look through lists of 'best books ever written' and I think there is something wrong with the people who chose the books. I wonder if they've ever read a decent book in their lives. In fact, I wonder how many books they've read.

I thought that To Kill a Mockingbird was the most boring load of pretentious bs.

The Fellowship of the Rings is one third of the book 'Lord of the Rings' which I read in 1975 and is oen of the best books I've ever read. However, I would put Dune by Frank Herbert as number one.

Lolita and the Great Gatsby are boring as hell. Ulysses is pretentious and meaningless. Very difficult to read as weell.

Why aren't authors like Rider Haggard, Alexander Dumas, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Leon Uris, James Mitchener, and a thousand others mentioned?

I suspect it is because a lot of the books mentioned in this list are all part of school and university syllabuses, so people are forced to read them, so they are the only books they know.

Unfortunately, universities and schools confuse good writing and excellent storytelling with humanist agendas. All the literary prizes are given for humamist issues mentioned and focused on books. The stories are generally awful, and the writing not so wonderful.
