The world was a different place when I grew up in the 50s and 60s. Business owners actually looked after their customers. So if I went into a store to buy a bra, there would be a lady to measure me and fit me properly. It didn’t matter what brand the bra was, they all used the same measuring system.

At some point, due to laissez-faire business practice, the law changed. There was no more regulation of sizes. So clothing manufacturers started using vanity sizing. In my youth, your size was either your bust measurement or your hip measurement. If your bust size was 36 inches, then your dress size was 36. If your hips were 34 inches, then your trouser or skirt size was 34 inches. If you needed a bra, then your bra size was the number of inches directly under your bus, and your cup size depended on the difference between the rib measurement and your bust measurement.

It was simple and easy.
