How does one handle people who tell one that the reason people fail is because they didn’t work hard and that they had no discipline? To some extent, my brain goes blank when I have comments like this thrown at me. I also feel an intense anger and (I am very unwilling to admit this) even feel a sort of hatred.
As more and more studies show, success has more to do with the financial prosperity of your parents (which allowed these people to get an eduation, focus on friendship and connections, etc), than intelligence, talent, hard work, etc.
I don’t want to have to defend my opinions all the time. It takes up too much time and energy, but more than that, I do not want to have a rational discussion with people who have these kind of ideas. I just want to get rid of them, kick them off my stream, insult them, have nothing to do with them. Ugh. You see, I have a dark side.
I posted about this on Facebook, and somebody posted this article. It blew my mind. It explains a lot. I have whole brain activity — both my left brain and my write brain work together (I have that in writing from a doctor who tested me).
So how do you respond to people who are totally convinced that the USA is the best country in the world, that Palestinian land belongs to Israel because Israel looks after the land (this one came at me today), and that writers fail to make a living because they don’t work hard and they don’t have discipline?
Please tell me. I need to handle things better.
