Having been educated in South Africa, the UK, and the US, I can assure you that what I learnt about government 60 years ago in South Africa still stands. I can also reason, separate fact from fiction, and my brain does not need renewal every year. I learnt how to extrapolate facts from information 60 years ago when we were taught how to write essays for history. The ability has never left me.

If Americans were really taught this, they would know the difference between socialism and communism. They don't. Nor have I met too many Americans who know the difference between mercantilism and capitalism.
.
You might be taught how the American political system works, but I would be very surprised if you told me you know how government in France works compared to government in the UK.

Part of my K12 education system also comprised criticizing systems to see why they would work and why they wouldn't work

I haven't forgotten that. I don't see why others would. It has also stood me in good stead when relocating to different countries. The principles are good government don't change. They are the same in all countries.

The American government does not demand that an immigrant rewrite their citizenship exam every year.

If course, I could be missing something here.

Perhaps, I should have added that they need to pass an exam.
