Gene, I was living in London when the American government decided they wanted to go to war against Iraq - because there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. There weren't. Tony Blair, against a strong negative vote in Parliament, gave the order for British troops to join the US in Iraq. It cost many British lives, killed millions of Iraqui, and Blair lost the next election. He has been a pariah ever since. He is spoken with with contempt.

Biden left many American soldiers in Afghanistan when he ordered them to pull out. He left hundreds of millions in equipment there.

So, let us be clear. The guy is not being appointed to being Chief of Staffs. He is not being appointed to being a general. Those people are promoted on the basis of how to run a war - not when ro run a war.

The political position involves when to run a war. He was military staff to advise on how to run a war. Trump is strongly antiwar, so I don't see this blowing up.
