From where I stand, I have watched calculators destroy the ability of students to understand math. I have watched the lack of teaching grammar destroy the ability of the past three generations to accurately express themselves. And I have watched a sort of stupidity and ignorance arrive because no foundation was ever laid.

There are no short cuts in education. The more students use tools to arrive at answers when they are incapable of doing the correct thing themselves, the nearer we come to that time when people make stupid decisions because they never understood the foundational information.

Education has two purposes. The first is to teach skills. The second is to learn how to differentiate between accurate and inaccurate data.
