America is an abbreviation for the United States of America, just as Mexico is an abbreviation for United Mexican States and South Africa is an abbreviation fort the Republic of South Africa.
Some other abbreviations are China for the Republic of China, Germany for the Federal Republic of Germany, and Ireland for the Republic of Ireland.
For your information, and in order to avoid you being seeing as ignorant in the future, may I suggest the following terminology.
The Americas refers to both Americas - North America and South America. North America refers to the continent covering the landmass of Canada, USA, Mexico, and Panama.
