Conservatives want democracy as well. Their has being a split between the left and right for a century - internationally.

That said, traditionally, people on the left used to workers and people on the right used to comprise the ownership class. That has changed during the past forty years (Since Thatcher, Reagan, Blair, etc.) made the left the ownership party as well. So now it's between liberalism and traditionalism.
