Cape Town is Probably the Most Beautiful City in the World

There is nothing like it in the world. Let me share it with you.

I want to show you a Cape Town that the tourist books don’t show you. This is the Victoria and Alfred waterfront in Cape Town. Own photo

I spent ten years in Cape Town between 1979 and 1989, and then I spent four years there between 2016 and 2020. I can’t tell you that I enjoyed the city in terms of its social life and its people. I didn’t. It has a reputation for being unfriendly (clicky), as well as having the most beautiful women in the world and too few men to take care of them.

Table Mountain is famous, of course, and just as most people instantly recognize the Eiffel Tower or Sugar Loaf Hill without going to those places, so it is with that flat mountain top. I’m going to show you a different Cape Town, though. I’m a lover of architecture, and I see cities and its people in a different way. So let’s begin.

Being Africa, it’s not unusual to find homeless communities. This one was in the middle of the street — the bushy isle that separated roads going in different directions. The artist is obviously quite talented. Own photo.
These were two shamans selling their Muti. Muti is magical medicine. Different herbs have different effects. One will bring you more money. Another will increase your kissing potential. Still another will curse your boss. All to be had in Adderley Street, Cape Town. Own photo.
