His grandfather also came from wealth - I would think that a 25,000 acre ranch in Texas from his great grandparents meant that they weren't poor. Jeff Bezos spent his vacations there. So he definitely associated with wealthy people and formed connections.

He went to Princeton. One doesn't just get into Princeton. There were contacts. You don't know what they were.
