Because when you are looking after your popularity to play to what the religous people want, and that means you play to ignorance. But also, people who play to religious people, and who are highly intellignt (and I'm not saying he is) are also there for power without any real solutions to anything. They are there for the power and money and screw everybody else - most politicians these days.

It is highly unlikely that one is educated (and I would call that tertiary degree and above, a speaker of several languges, and a solid knowledge of world history and geograph, the sciences, math, etc.) and still retain any belief in god.
