At a guess, fake accounts are created (that is what a bot is), and I assume these bots follow different writers for some agenda or other. No idea. Of course, there are people who buy bots to make it look as if they have lots of folflowers.
This is for Instagram, but it might apply for Medium. And you are a well known person on Medium.
