And yet after 11 years I left. It is not an easy country. Funny enough, when I was relocating from London to the States, numerous people warned me not to go. And many South Africans (I am half South African) wrote to me from the States and told me that they were going to return to South Africa.

People from many different countries all asked me the same question "What did I think of Americans." They all said it was impossible to make friends.

A South African guy (San Diego) told me he had made a lot of money, but it was a very hard country, and that in 21 years, he had never made a friend.

Another Jamaican guy had been there 35 years and he had never made a friend.

I have never been so poor in my life as I have been in America. Every time I went for a writing job, people wanted me to write for nothing. I even had some Hollywood producers approach me, but they would never talk about money.

I'm sure that there is a trick to surviving and makign money in America, but I never figured it out.
