KDP had only three hurdles between a nascent author and a published book. 1) The author had to write the book — to the level of doneness they deemed necessary. 2) The author had to format the book in a way the Kindle could display. There were tools like Vellum for this and professional-looking results were easy. 3) The author had to upload their files and enter the right settings for their book. Again, super-easy. When all of this was done: the magic “Publish” button.

And now I agree with you. In the early days, I had no idea how to make a book cover. Nor did I have the funds to be edited. But also, I was under such stress that I couldn't function properly. Even with that, I was placed in the competition they ran in 2010/11 or thereabouts. Shortly after that, I withdrew the book from publication.
