Actually, they aren't making that much of a living from it. If they were, they would shut up and just write. Their real money comes from selling coures to people who think that once they have done the course, they will also be successful writers. It's simply not true.

Sucess as a writer is generally the combination of several factors:

Luck

Good command of language

Continual choice of excellent topics.
